  • Alarmingly, this figure is predicted to more than double by 2036.
  • These women grapple with financial hardship driven by rising costs, limited employment opportunities, meagre superannuation, and a scarcity of affordable housing. Women over 55 are now the fastest-growing homeless population in Australia.
  • In Australia, only 6 percent of people who are homeless sleep on the streets.
  • Young or old, women are disproportionately represented in homelessness statistics. Last year, 19% of people seeking help from specialist homelessness services were aged 15–24, with nearly twice as many females (66%) compared to males (34%)

4 Pink Wheels

More than 40,000 Queensland women over the age of 55 face homelessness, and we believe over 500 of them may be right here in the Toowoomba and Darling Downs South West and the Southern Downs Regions. That's 500 women who are someone's beloved aunt, mother, or grandmother, struggling to stay afloat. Accurate numbers are elusive as these women are often hidden from view.

Often referred to as the "hidden homeless," these women live in cars, couch surf, and face the constant threat of violence or abuse. Their hardships are not always visible, but they are very real.

By participating in the 4 Pink Wheels event, you're taking a stand to empower vulnerable women right here in Toowoomba. Your support will directly impact the lives of women who need it most.

Protea Place News

Amanda & Melissa
05 May, 2023
FEEL GOOD FRIDAY! Just popped in to fill up the Protea Place van. Unbeknownst to me, the woman ahead of me had accidentally paid for the wrong pump. As she walked away, I went to pay for my petrol. The cashier called out to her to let her know. She came back and said “Ok, just call it a blessing for them,” and proceeded to pay for her actual pump. I said "No, no it’s fine we can fix it". She smiled and said, "I hope it blesses you". Then I told her, "Well actually you’ve just paid the petrol for a charity women’s support service," and pointed to our van... "And this covers us for a month so that’s who you’ve blessed". We had a hug including the gorgeous young cashier who was also blown away. Melissa is from NSW and just passing thru town and knew nothing about Protea Place. She reluctantly let me take a pic so we could all celebrate her kindness. Thank you Melissa, you’ve made my day!
